Changabang

Changabang at the hand of her previous skipper, Jacques Valente.

Changabang is an early generation Class40 sailboat. The Class40 rules allowed the development of offshore short handed sailboats. In the early days, the design often included an option to be converted into spartan cruiser after their useful life as racing machines. Of importance to me is that Changabang is a fractional cutter with a masthead spinnaker option, allowing lots of flexibility. She has twin rudders, reserve flotation, and watertight bulkheads, adding to her intrinsic safety. Her coach roof is enormous, providing plenty standing height and storage inside, which lends itself well for a circumnavigation.

Early days

French naval architect Francois Lucas designed her lines. There are a total of 3 in existence (one French, one Brit and one Russian). More recently, Francois Lucas adapted the same design for 3 boats purchased by the Indian Navy. Changabang is reportedly of excellent fiberglass/red cedar strip planking construction by Pascal Doin.

Pascal Doin next to his creation.
